Marvelous Monday

A good number of my friends suffer from the Monday blues.  I try to always be extremely positive about Mondays, but sometimes those Monday blues creep in.

Typically during the week, I have zero trouble falling asleep.  I typically fall asleep mid-sentence telling Daniel how “I don’t feel sleepy at all and I just…zzzzzz…”  He gets a kick out of how easily and quickly I can be out of it.

Sunday nights are a totally different story.  Since Sunday is my rest day, I’m rarely tired when it comes time for me to hit the hay.  Even though I know I have to be up incredibly early the next morning, I just can’t get to sleep as easily.  Last night, I fell into a restless tossing and turning fit sometime before midnight.  I woke up sometime around 1:15 a.m. and lay there, and lay there, and lay there some more.  At 2 I decided I would read, which usually makes me sleepy at night.  Not last night.  Knowing that my alarm was going off in less than two hours, I forced my eyes shut at 3:30.  Needless to say, when I woke up I didn’t feel rested at all, and the last thing I wanted to do was crawl out from my warm cozy bed to the cold hardwood floor and get ready to workout. 

BUT we all know how much better a workout makes things, so I got up and got ready for Martha to join me for our Monday training session.  It started out a little slow since I was having trouble making my limbs function properly, but we ended up sweating and getting in a good resistance workout.

After hanging out with my awesome students all day, I felt like I hit a wall around 3:30.  I had to teach cardio dance at 4:30, so I opted to walk for a bit to get my blood flowing and slightly elevate my heart rate.  I may have also had a small piece of dark chocolate, which always helps! 😉

Both my cardio dance and abs classes were full tonight, so my energy levels were definitely up!  After class, I had about 1.5-2 hours to kill before Zumba at another gym…let’s just Marshall’s was involved and I have an adorable new jacket to wear tomorrow.  I also went by The Vitamin Shoppe and picked up some stuff I’ve been out of for awhile.  My amazing Zumba friends packed the house tonight and we had a sweaty, fun, and energizing workout! 

I can tell it’s not the weekend anymore since my eyelids are getting extremely heavy as I write this!  Some people use calendars and watches to keep up with the date and time…I use the weight of my eyelids.  🙂

Enough words, it’s time for bed!  I’m leading faculty devotions in the morning, so say a prayer for me, okay?  Thanks!

DIET – the ultimate four letter word

Most people cringe when they hear the word “diet” because they think of eating small amounts of tasteless food, giving up all their favorite foods, and waking up in the middle of the night so hungry they start gnawing on the bedpost.

I think it is interesting that the word diet actually means “the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.”  The origin of the word diet comes from a Greek word meaning “a way of living.”  Looking at the word from this perspective puts a much more positive spin on it. 

Lately, I have noticed that I have allowed too many empty carbs (sweets) back into my regular eating habits.  Accordingly, I have noticed a few extra pounds creep on my waistline.  In order to get this extra weight off, I am not GOING on a diet, but I am going to ADJUST my diet  way of life.  This means less refined sugars (so long, mini kit-kats, it’s been real), more vegetables, and also a change in my workout routine. 

My body has gotten used to my routine, and now the hour long sweat session of Zumba that occurs 3-4 times a week is just “the norm.”  This week, I have added in two Piloxing classes (have y’all heard of this or taken the class?  It’s so much fun!), some Jillian Michaels (6 week 6 pack), new weight lifting combos, and HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts.  I bought the Women’s Health Big Book of 15 Minute Workouts and have been mixing those in with my other workouts.  Needless to say, I’ve been sore all week!  I know I’m not the only one who rejoices when I wake up and my muscles are stiff and sore from an effective workout! 🙂 

Even though I’m cutting back in some areas of my eating habits, I am DEFINITELY not eliminating things I love (chocolate, frozen yogurt, carbs, cheese).  I have recently fallen in love with three new (to me) forms of chocolate.

Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Caramel Bar with Sea Salt (this one is still an indulgent and decadent treat, but it counts because it’s a new obsession – and dark chocolate has antioxidants).

I will keep you posted on my adjusted eating habits and way of life in general!

Trader Joe’s = Happiness

I absolutely love Trader Joe’s.  As soon as I walk through the doors, I always stand there and smile thinking about all the fresh produce, unique products, and amazing deals (until people start giving me weird looks, then I move on to the shopping).  I’m one of the crazy people that LOVE to shop for groceries.  I enjoy reading labels, discovering new products, pairing foods, and finding good deals.    Couple that with the awesomeness of Trader Joe’s, and you will have something that resembles a kid on Christmas morning. 


Unfortunately, the closest TJ’s is two hours away.  I know, sad.  However, I have a couple of friends that share my affinity for the quaint store.  One of us is usually heading that way at least once a month, so we take turns stocking up for each other.  We are going at the end of October, and last week I was thinking about all the stuff I desperately needed wanted from there, and that I didn’t know if I could wait that long.  That’s when my client/friend/fellow TJ’s fan told me she was going THIS WEEKEND!!!  I was so happy that I let her skip the last circuit of our workout.  Okay, that’s a lie, I would never ever do that, but I did say that I was happy enough that it crossed my mind.  Luckily she is hard core and wouldn’t skip anyway haha.

I took her a cooler, some cash, and a looooong list of the products that had been on my mind.  Some of my favorite items that I always get from there:

  • goat’s milk creamy cheese
  • raisin rosemary crackers (seriously – these are like crack)
  • roasted seaweed snacks
  • pizza dough (only $1 – and so so good)
  • pumpkin butter
  • organic dark chocolate bars
  • crunchy curls
  • dried mango
  • balsamic vinegar
  • almond butter with roasted flax seeds (I am definitely addicted to this)

Of course, there were several other items on my list, as well as a note that read “anything else you think I would like or may possibly need.”

On Tuesday, I will have my stash of TJ’s products, and I will probably open almost everything to sample and savor the goodness that is Trader Joe’s.
