Daniel’s Birthday Weekend

at lulus

Daniel and I have a LOT in common – foods, hobbies, faith, travel, goals, etc.  One thing we do not see the same way is birthdays.  I am one of those “Hey, it’s July!  It’s your birthday month and we are going to celebrate every single day!”  Daniel’s idea of his birthday is “just another day.”  He doesn’t like anyone to make a big deal over it, even me (not that I would or anything…hahaha).  For his thirtieth birthday last year, I threw him a big surprise party with a band and about thirty of our closest friends.  It was SO MUCH FUN!  This year, I promised not to throw any parties or plan any crazy surprises.

On Friday night, I reassured Daniel that I didn’t have any surprises planned for our weekend, and we headed out Longhorn Steakhouse for dinner.  They always have great service and the food never disappoints.  Daniel had a steak and I had cedar grilled shrimp and vegetables.  We decided to go out to a local place that was featuring six different bands.  One of our friends, Steven, is a drummer for one of the bands that was playing.  Of course, his band was set to play last.  The place only had three speakers (for alllll those instruments and vocals) and they had NO AIR CONDITIONING.  Not sure if you’ve ever been to Tennessee in late July before, but it is H-O-T.  The temperature outside was still over 90, and the heat index was about 100.  Throw in a hot building with no airflow, six bands, and people everywhere….and inside it seemed about 150 degrees.  Even though it was so hot and the sound wasn’t the greatest, we still had a great time hanging out with our friends.

Saturday was AMAZING – we slept in (which we never do) and then spent the day just hanging out, talking, and playing with the puppies.  Even though Daniel’s birthday is today, I gave him his present yesterday (separate post for his birthday surprise).  We went out again for dinner (usually it’s a once a week thing) to a local Italian place where we enjoyed chicken marsala, eggplant parmesan, and lasagna.  After the salad and bread, I think I may have had about four bites of the entrees before I felt full.  It was all delicious!  We ended up going out again to hear several musicians play an open-mic style show.  It was a benefit concert for a wonderful musician that lost his battle with cancer last week.  Even though the music was mostly heavy rock, the emotion in the room was beautiful.

Today started with church and life group and then lunch at Los Portales with family.  This is what Daniel is doing now….

napping with Harley.  Isn’t it adorable?  *sorry for the blurry phone pic*

Tonight is family dinner to celebrate his birthday and maybe a movie.

Do you love to celebrate birthdays or do you think they are just another day?
